90 years newspaper horoscope - No mistake!
Sensible people dismiss horoscopes as nonsense. But even the very first horoscope in a British newspaper was amazingly correct, Arno Orzessek found out. For this reason, he was guided by his zodiac sign when designing his gloss.
To be read in various horoscopes: What do the stars tell us? (imago / Realcg)
We are torn! On the one hand, newspaper horoscopes are considered total nonsense. Every serious astrologer can confirm: The few lines that are based only on the twelve signs of the zodiac - without the ascendant, horoscope house, lunar node and other elementary things - are scandalously under-complex.
A single forecast for a twelfth of humanity every day - no, that's really too stupid! It is not for nothing that the online magazine Astrologie 2000 railed with disgust against “vulga rstrology” for mere “entertainment”.
On the other hand, we are astonished: On August 24, 1930, the Sunday Express predicted an eventful life for the newborn Princess Margaret in the first tabloid horoscope ever ... And at least since the Netflix series The Crown, everyone knows: That's exactly how it turned out! Margaret's men’s stories alone and her quarrel with sister Elizabeth!
Horoscopes under a lucky star
In addition, Mercury was in the zodiac sign of Virgo that day. That is why the birth of the newspaper horoscope as such had the blessing from above. Because Mercurius is the messenger of the gods in Roman mythology.
Or are there really better explanations that the newspaper horoscope has had such a huge career as a medium of extraterrestrial knowledge?
One thing is clear: Anyone who reads the astrology criticism by science cracks like Karl (Raimund) Popper and Paul Feyerabend will fall away from believing in the stars like a lazy pear from a tree. Serious astrology doesn't exist, neither in newspapers nor anywhere, that's that!
But be honest, dear fellow human beings - and enjoy our play on words: Do you ever read Feyerabend after work? There you are! We too preferred to study our weekly horoscope in the local specialist journal Astrowoche in anticipation of the tricky gloss.
Shape your options
And again: a direct hit! Löwen is told: "This week you will be faced with great challenges in your job [...]."
How did Astro Week know that we would be seized with epistemological dizziness because of the horoscopes - if the stars didn't tell it?
Then today, as if to compensate: soul doping from the online Express itself, the joint portal of the Daily and Sunday Express. The Express advises all Lions: "Show initiative and create your own possibilities." No journalist in writing difficulties who did not feel encouraged.
And you cannot deny: We design our glosses exactly according to our possibilities! Yes, dear wise guys of all genders - we know that you are thinking of the Barnum Effect: According to this, unstable spirits tend to perceive vague statements about themselves - here: their own zodiac sign - to be correct.
The mind gives us trouble
And we don't want to stop you from not trusting newspaper horoscopes. (I assume the double negation here is on purpose and you stress the sentence in a way that makes it understandable.)
But we ourselves are in a bind. What applies to us is what the astrologer Norbert Giesow announced on sternzeichen.net: "Man has developed a powerful tool with his mind, which often bothered him." That is exactly our problem: The mind has been troubling us since then we deal with the horoscope stuff.
Oh, we too want to believe in rationality again. But our horoscope on instyle.de says very clearly: Today is the best day "to postpone an important project a little."
